First Fire Station

Ascension Day

On May 24, 1900, fire broke out in the rear of Charles Smith's property. This fire destroyed the entire section of Railroad Alley, between the railroad and Federal Cigar Co.

First Ave. Fire Station

First Avenue Station Built

In 1904, after a seven-year search, the company purchased a site for a building First Avenue and Railroad Alley. This lot was purchased from Elija J. Miller at a cost of $1,500. The company resolved to build a 28' x 60' two-story building at a cost not to exceed $4,000. The building was completed in February 1905, and conveyed to Borough Council who agreed to pay all interest, taxes and upkeep expenses on the building. This was Leo’s home-to-be for 65 years. The building that housed the fire company on this lot is still standing today.

LaFrance Steam Engine

LaFrance Steam Engine

A new LaFrance Steam Engine was purchased at a cost of $3,000.00. This was bought after the 1900 Ascension Day Fire. The steamer was pulled by hand on its way to fires while frantic efforts were made to build a fire in its boiler.

Parade

Parades

Parades began as an early tradition in the fire service. On parade days, well-groomed horses bedecked with tassels were hitched to the steamer with its brass fittings shining. The wooden spokes were well cleaned and polished.
